Welcome to the Harmon/Stone Mystery Website!

In case this is your first time visiting this site, let me explain exactly what the "mystery" is.  In this particular branch of my family tree, there lived a family in Webster County, Kentucky that went by two different names at different times between 1860 and 1910; sometimes they called themselves "Harmon" but most of the time they went by "Stone".  Now this is the entire family unit of a husband, wife, and their twelve children!  The real puzzler here is why in the world would this whole family, including grown married children with new families of their own, suddenly change their last names around 1900, nearly all at once and forever after, to Harmon when they have been known their entire lives as Stones?

This research is focused on George Harmon/Stone and his wife, Sarah Angelina Holmes Harmon/Stone, their children and descendants. (Many researchers think there is a connection between our George and Levi Stone. There very well may be, and I would love to hear more from people working on that! If we uncover hard evidence as to George's parents or siblings, I'll be happy to add it to this site.) All the information is correct to the best of my knowledge, based on information from census records, marriage and death certificates, obituaries, and first-hand information from Harmon/Stone descendants.

Here is a quick OVERVIEW of this website to help you find your way around. The Facts page has all the documented information I have, including census listings and marriage records.  The Questions page highlights the major points we are trying to answer.  Most important of all is the Family page which contains the genealogy information for the Harmon/Stone family, listing all of their children and grandchildren. (This is where you will find birth and death dates, spouses, and burial information). Our Message Forum is a great place to post messages and see what others have posted. {Please click on the name of the page you'd like to visit under Site Navigation in the upper left corner.}

I started this website as a way for all the people researching this line to have a sort of 'Homebase' - a place to view all the facts that have been found, to discuss any theories they may come up with, to brainstorm, or just to meet other long-lost cousins.  And if you stumbled upon this site and you're not into  genealogy, stick around and have a look anyway.  If you are the type that likes mysteries, you might get hooked and want to help us figure things out!

  If there is anything at all you would like to contribute to this site, or any corrections you think should be made, please e-mail me or post the information on the Message Forum.
